Lester Moore has lain in Tombstone's Boot Hill cemetery since 1880, and everyone's heard that little rhyme at one time or another, but the question is, who was he, exactly, and why did somebody put four rounds in him?...
Answer: he was a station agent for Wells Fargo in Naco, (a few miles south of Bisbee, down on the border) and one afternoon in 1880 he got into a crazy and fatal squabble with a man named Hank Dunstan.
Dunstan walked into the Naco Wells Fargo office to pick up a package. A badly mangled one, as it turned out, and he got into Moore's face about it. Moore yelled back, and guns were drawn. Dunstan got off four shots, Moore one, and both men died. Lester Moore's body was hauled by wagon to Tombstone, and was buried in Boot Hill. Don't know where Hank Dunstan ended up. (Or any more about him.)
Don't know who penned that amazing epitaph, either...
